Special Educational Needs Rehabilitation

Special educational needs rehabilitation is the process of assessment, treatment and management of children and young people, and their education related barriers.

What is Special Education Needs Rehabilitation?

Special eductional needs - also referred to as SEN - refers to children or young people who have learning or behavioural difficulties, or a disability that prevents them from learning in the same way as their peers.

SEN rehabilitation can involve occupational therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, speech and language therapy, and more. However, for those living with neurological or neurodivergent conditions, or brain injury, their special educational needs rehabilitation will benefit from neurological occupational therapy input.

Specialised assessments and interventions can support a child or young person with their special educational needs, allowing them to develop and strengthen academic, social, communicative, and physical skills.

How Occupational Therapists Provide SEN Rehab

Neurological occupational therapists can provide SEN rehabilitation by focusing on cognition and learning, sensory and physical needs, as well as a child or young person's communication, social, and emotional strengths and challenges.

Krysalis can support children with education and healthcare plans via interventions and strategies, and we also have sensory integrated practitioners that can carry out assessments for children and young people whose special educational needs are sensory-related.

Our neurological occupational therapists can also make recommendations for environmental modifications in the home or at school and suggest adaptive equipment and aids that can support the child in their education.

A Collaborative Effort

Children and young people will also receive support from their school or college. They may need an education, health and care plan (EHCP) if they require more support than their school can supply, which helps those up to the age of 25.

For those at nursery and primary school, establishments registered with Ofsted follow an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which ensures there is support in place for children with special educational needs. There may also be education staff with SEN training, or special educational needs coordinators within schools that can provide the support needed.

Our neurological occupational therapists and sensory integration practitioners can work alongside education staff and the SENCO team, and can also educate family members and legal guardians on how to best support a child or young person with special education needs.
