What is a Fundamental Vocational Assessment?
A Fundamental Vocational Assessment is designed for individuals with moderate to complex needs, where neurological difficulties affect multiple areas of everyday life as well as vocational potential. Individuals may have been out of work for some time and need a more structured approach to exploring future paid or voluntary work.
The assessment explores how physical, cognitive, executive and psychological factors, alongside the individual’s environment and circumstances, affect everyday function and vocational participation. It identifies strengths, challenges, risks and support needs, helping to clarify realistic vocational goals and next steps.
Where needed, the assessment may involve collaborative working with family, case managers, rehabilitation professionals or others providing support. It provides case managers and legal professionals with expert insight to inform rehabilitation planning and longer-term vocational decision-making.
The Fundamental Vocational Assessment is usually completed in person, enabling the occupational therapist to develop a detailed understanding of the individual’s functional presentation, support needs and vocational aspirations.
