Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of movement conditions that appear in early childhood.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy, which can also be referred to as CP, is the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and coordination. It is caused by damage to the brain that develops before, during, or after birth. The condition is not usually visible straight away, but symptoms may start to appear at an early age.

Cerebral palsy can have multiple causes which may include bleeding in a baby's brain or reduced blood and oxygen in the brain, temporary loss of oxygen to a baby's brain during a difficult birth, an infection caught during pregnancy, meningitis, or a head injury.

Despite this, the exact cause is not always evident for every individual.

Luckily, the initial issue with the brain does not worsen over time. However, the condition can affect each individual differently, with the severity spanning from some only having minor issues while others may be severely disabled.

How Can Cerebral Palsy Affect You?

Cerebral palsy symptoms can often vary in each individual, and can also be dependent on the type of brain injury or condition cause. The symptoms can also change with age.

Initial symptoms may include a child not being able to sit by 8 months or not being able to walk by 18 months.

Symptoms that affect the body include stiff muscles, weak limbs, tremors, issues with coordination, and walking on tiptoes. Other problems also include issues with speaking or vision, and some may present with learning difficulties.

Individuals with cerebral palsy can also experience fatigue, have issues swallowing, and present with behavioural problems.

Neuro Occupational Therapy With Cerebral Palsy

For children and adults living with cerebral palsy, neurological occupational therapy can provide a tailored approach to address not only the physical abilities of an individual, but the functional and cognitive abilities, as well as overall well-being.

At Krysalis, we focus on supporting each individual with the unique challenges they face, helping them to build the skills that promote greater independence in daily life.

For children experiencing cerebral palsy symptoms such as sensory processing difficulties, we can provide a sensory integration practitioner. These specialist occupational therapists can work closely with a child to enhance their ability to receive, register, and interpret sensory information more effectively.

This will help a child living with cerebral palsy to become more confident and will allow them to engage more successfully in everyday activities at home, in school, and in social settings.

For adults, neurological occupational therapy can help assist in achieving a more independent lifestyle, improving quality of life, and helping develop a workable routine around daily living, work, or higher education. This may include implementing supportive and adaptive techniques that make everyday tasks more manageable.

  • The following will never be enough to illustrate Paul’s journey but we are eternally grateful to the NHS, IM, ILS, Krysalis and the whole infrastructure that has been created for Paul. Yes, Paul is focused, determined and driven but the whole team have created a rehabilitation environment that has changed our life and Pauls future, they have made the thought of life and rehabilitation, turn from the impossible to the possible. • The thought of having the family undertake this journey alone seems impossible and we will be always grateful. We all recognise that James is still on the rehabilitation journey, but there is no stopping him. He has just walked to Mum’s & Dad’s on his own (phone first to say he’s on his way)... what a way to celebrate the 2-year journey.Brother of brain injured survivor
  • I highly recommend Krysalis Consultancy OT services. Anna has been our life line since she came on board to help my husband following his brain injury. He has improved greatly thanks to Anna’s input in assisting him to become independent, teaching him step by step the simple things which we all take for granted. Anna is there for us 100%, teaching us both strategies to enable us to achieve better results.Wife of brain injured survivor
