What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy, which can also be referred to as CP, is the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and coordination. It is caused by damage to the brain that develops before, during, or after birth. The condition is not usually visible straight away, but symptoms may start to appear at an early age.
Cerebral palsy can have multiple causes which may include bleeding in a baby's brain or reduced blood and oxygen in the brain, temporary loss of oxygen to a baby's brain during a difficult birth, an infection caught during pregnancy, meningitis, or a head injury.
Despite this, the exact cause is not always evident for every individual.
Luckily, the initial issue with the brain does not worsen over time. However, the condition can affect each individual differently, with the severity spanning from some only having minor issues while others may be severely disabled.
