Education and Healthcare Plans

Education and healthcare plans are a legally binding document outlining a child or young person's special educational, health, and social care needs.

What is an Education and Healthcare Plan?

Introduced under the 2014 legislation, education and healthcare plans are a report that refers to the special education, health and social care needs of a child or young person, which provides SEND pupils with the legal entitlement to receive the specialist educational support they need.

EHCPs can support those up to the age of 25, and legal authorities are rightfully bound to cover the cost of the provision set out in the young person's plan up until this age.

It is estimated that the number of pupils with EHCPs has risen 71% between 2018 and 2024, with pupils living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) making up one-third of this statistic. Education and healthcare plans provide statutory certainty that a child or young person will get the support they require.

Individuals

An education and healthcare plan is suitable for children and young people with special educational needs, who may have a suspected or diagnosed neurodivergent condition.

Supporting Adults

EHCPs are suitable for family members and legal guardians, education staff, and local education authorities who are seeking to understand the needs of a SEND child or young person.

Occupational Therapy and EHCPs

For families desperate to get their children the support they need, private occupational therapists that can write reports for education and healthcare plans and have experience with tribunals are vital. This is demonstrated in the growing NHS assessment waiting times, with children's needs going unmet and many living with neurodivergent diagnoses without any additional support.

The writing on an EHCP report may coincide with a child or young person's occupational therapy intervention, which involves the assessment, treatment and management of children and young people and their education-related barriers.

Education Healthcare Plan Support

When completing an EHCP, our occupational therapists will do so with the family or carer of the child or young person present, with the focus of the report on the individual's occupational engagement and performance, as well as their participation in their life roles.

Following the assessment, the occupational thrapist may also provide intervention that focuses on fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory integration challenges, daily living skills, and more, depending on the child or young person's needs. The occupational therapist also plays a vital role in annually reviewing the report to ensure that the needs are reflective of the individual's current ability.
