What is Functional Neurological Disorder?
Functional neurological disorder is an uncontrollable condition that affects the way the brain receives and sends information.
The condition, and its symptoms, are described as 'functional' because FND is a disorder of the nervous system, rather than damage to the brain, as seen in dementia or stroke. It does not affect the structure of the brain, only the function.
FND is more likely to develop when an individual has another neurological condition, and it can also be linked to other conditions such as migraines. Despite this, the causes for functional neurological disorder are yet to be identified.
FND symptoms can include body tremours, paralysis, or seizures. Other symptoms, such as neurological fatigue or pain are often found alongside functional neurological disorder.
