2023 ABI Week campaign, #Every90Seconds: a 90-second read

It only takes a few seconds for a life to be completely knocked off course.

Headway [1]

By the time readers of average speed [2] reach the end of this article, another person will have been admitted to a UK hospital with a life-changing brain injury.

That is one admission every 90 seconds – a shocking statistic driving this year’s Action for Brain Injury (ABI) Week led by UK brain injury charity, Headway.

The 2023 campaign, ‘Take a second’ urges us all to take a little time to raise brain injury awareness in any way we can.

It is an appeal that our neuro occupational therapists (OTs) find hard to ignore. Widening understanding of a neuro diagnosis is, after all, an effective neurorehabilitation tool [3].

Headway hopes people affected by brain injury will share their lived experiences in online forums. Or they could use social media to promote fund-raising events for its support services.

The charity is open to all efforts to help explain the impact of brain injuries, including those linked to:

  • stroke
  • falls
  • road traffic collisions
  • assaults
  • brain tumors
  • meningitis

“Headway is here to support everyone affected by a brain injury and those caring for them,” a spokesperson said.

“Through the support of a network of local groups and branches, our free helpline and online resources, we rebuild lives – second by second, step by step, day by day.”
