What is Sensory Processing and Integration Therapy?
For children, young people, and adults who are living with a diagnosed or suspected neurodivergent condition, sensory processing difficulties can often cause challenges within daily living activities.
These difficulties can cause issues with an individual's senses such as taste, touch, sight, sound, and smell, as well as proprioception issues that involve poor body awareness. These difficulties may also affect an individual's vestibular system such as issues with balance.
Sensory processing and integration therapy is an approach involving engaging activities that allow an individual's brain to make better connections between sensory input and adaptive responses. It enhances the individual's functional abilities and increases the ability to participate in everyday tasks.
This approach of occupational therapy can also help an individual to self-regulate their emotions when responding to sensory input. Those with sensory seeking behaviour, or those with sensory avoidance may benefit from sensory integration therapy.
