Although we will not solve the problem of how the water of objective brain mechanisms transforms into the wine of subjective consciousness, we shall end up with a much clearer idea of the combination of factors that drive, shape, and control it.

Baroness Susan Greenfield [1]

The ‘glamorous, funny, and tirelessly innovative [2]’ Baroness Susan Greenfield joins us at the Head First brain injury conference, ‘Whose life is it anyway?’ this week.

We are delighted (again!) to be headline sponsors of this popular event - the biggest one-day brain injury conference hosted by Head First, specialists in brain injury assessment, rehabilitation, and case management.

One cannot create one programme or pathway that fits all because everyone has different circumstances in the community, every brain and therefore every brain injury is different – and trauma affects everyone uniquely.

The 2022 conference in London will explore means of supporting effective community-based neurorehabilitation for the benefit of individuals and society as a whole.

And, in her keynote address, Lady Greenfield will illuminate the neuroscience of subjective experience, as described in her latest book, A Day in the Life of the Brain.

Looking forward to the conference on the 12th of May, she said, “Consciousness is the ultimate miracle - and enigma.

“However, most people take this subjective inner state for granted without ever reflecting on what could possibly be happening in their brain each day of their waking lives.

“We will explore this deeply fascinating question from the perspective of neuroscience, using a wide range of examples from daily life such as waking up, walking the dog, dreaming, and experiencing pain […]”

A Head First spokesperson summarized the conference aims: “We all have different values and lifestyles and brain injury rehabilitation has to be bespoke, meaningful and add value.

“Finding a way to gauge success using standard rehabilitation outcome measures can be tricky. This conference will review the current state of brain injury rehabilitation, with particular focus on the unique factors impacting community-based rehabilitation.”

After a welcome from our Director, Jo Throp, delegates will hear from a broad range of experts with innovative neurorehabilitation perspectives, including:

  • Conference Chair and Enable Law partner, Huw Ponting
  • Dr Andrew Bateman, Chairperson of the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum (UKABIF)
  • Wendy Irons, Neuro Rehab Lead (North Kent), Kent & Medway
  • Clinical Lead and Head of Neurorehabilitation Service, Heather Campbell from Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
  • Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, Priyanka Pradhan of Neurolistics Ltd
  • Head First Brain Injury Case Manager, Jo Pendlebury
  • Fergus Gracey, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Cambridge Centre for Paediatric Neuropsychological Rehabilitation

Over 300 professionals will be convening at the event at the Pullman London St Pancras.

The conference, organised by ABI Solutions [1], also provides essential CPD/APIL accredited learning for rehabilitation providers, case managers, lawyers, therapists, and academics.
