Mobility matchmaking – Part 4: Permobil M Corpus ® VS

Which 2023 wheelchair or mobility scooter would you choose to chum up with?

The design choice in wheelchairs and mobility scooters is growing globally , which is excellent news for users and those who support them.

But which characteristics should you look for in what may become one of your best mobile buddies ever?

Our neuro OTs are experts at sourcing the right mobility aids for their clients. (See Make it a Match below.)

So, to help kick-start your search, we're taking an impartial* look at 10 of the latest models making headlines in the UK this year.

In Part 4 of our series, we turn to Swedish manufacturer Permobil making a stand for a more upwardly mobile world with its...

M Corpus® VS

Designed with the user in mind, the M Corpus VS allows easy adjustment of the standing sequence and positioning to your individual needs in real time.

Permobil

The M Corpus® VS powered wheelchair boosts independence by putting the power to stand up back in the control of its user.

And being able to stand opens doors to other benefits, say its makers, Permobil, pointing to evidence that shows standing:

  • Increases participation in activities of daily living
  • Enhances communication and face-to-face interactions
  • Extends range of motion and functional reach
  • Improves mental health outcomes
  • Reduces health risks linked to long-term sitting
  • Redistributes pressure on the body

The M Corpus VS is designed for people who want to benefit from standing but cannot stand independently.

One of its many mechanical plus points is its manoeuvrability. And that's down to the location of its drive wheels in the middle of its wheelbase.

This achieves greater stability and, with its supporting castor wheels, lessens the risk of the wheelchair tipping backwards or forwards.

Other features include:

  • 4-wheel suspension for ride comfort
  • Light, swing-away knee supports
  • Programmable standing sequences for supine, semi-reclined, and sit-to-stand
  • Chest bar for comfort and confidence
  • Programmable footplate height

And, as the powerchair's name confirms, it comes fitted with the Corpus® Seating System, 'designed to improve comfort, pelvic positioning, lateral stability and immersion.'

Permobil has been innovating wheelchair designs for 55 years and has created thousands of adaptations to meet individual needs.

The company's founder, Swedish doctor Per Uddén, felt driven to solve problems that his disabled patients faced in their everyday lives.

"Our founder believed that helping individuals achieve the greatest level of independence is a basic human right," Permobil says. "We are passionate about understanding our users' needs and helping them live life to their fullest.

  • Does it give you the space, support, and comfort you need?
